Blood in the Forest: The End Of The Second World War In The Courland Pocket

Blood in the Forest: The End Of The Second World War In The Courland Pocket

Blood in the Forest tells the brutal story of the forgotten battles of the final months of the Second World War. While the eyes of the world were on Hitler's bunker, more than half a million men fought six cataclysmic battles along a front line of fields and forests in Western Latvia known as the Courland Pocket. Just an hour from the capital Riga, German forces bolstered by Latvian Legionnaires were cut off and trapped with their backs to the Baltic. The only way out was by sea: the only chance of survival to hold back the Red Army. Forced into uniform by Nazi and Soviet occupiers, Latvian fought Latvian - sometimes brother against brother. Hundreds of thousands of men died for little territorial gain in unimaginable slaughter. When the Germans capitulated, thousands of Latvians continued a war against Soviet rule from the forests for years afterwards.

An award-winning documentary journalist, the author travels through the modern landscape gathering eye-witness accounts from seventy years before piecing together for the first time in English the stories of those who survived. He meets veterans who fought in the Latvian Legion, former partisans and a refugee who fled the Soviet advance to later become President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, A survivor of the little-known concentration camp at Popervale and founder of Riga's Jewish Museum, Margers Vestermanis has never spoken about his personal experiences. Here he gives details of the SS new world order planned in Kurzeme, his escape from a death march and subsequent survival in the forests with a Soviet partisan group - and a German deserter.

With eyewitness accounts, detailed maps and expert contributions alongside rare newspaper archive, photographs from private collections and extracts from diaries translated into English from Latvian, German and Russian, the author assembles a ghastly picture of death and desperation in a tough, uncomfortable story of a nation both gripped by war and at war with itself.

Animals in the Great War (Images of War)

Animals in the Great War (Images of War)

Tails from the Great War throws a spotlight on the experience of creatures great and small during the First World War, vividly telling their stories through the incredible archival images of the Mary Evans Picture Library. The enduring public interest in Michael Morpurgo's tale of the war horse reveals an enthusiasm for the animal perspective on war, but what of the untold stories of the war dog, the trench rat or even the ship's pig? Through unrivalled access to rarely seen illustrated wartime magazines, books and postcards, discover the sea lions who were trained to detect submarines, and witness the carcass of the 61ft mine-destroying wonder whale. Meet the dog that brought a sailor back from the brink of death, and inspired a Hollywood legend. See how depictions of animals were powerfully manipulated by the propaganda machine on both sides, and how the presence of animals could bring much needed and even lifesaving companionship and cheer amid the carnage of war.As the centenary of the Great War is commemorated all over the world, take a timely journey via the lens of Mary Evans wartime images, and marvel at the often overlooked but significant contribution and experience of animals at war. By turns astonishing, heart-warming and occasionally downright bizarre, Tails from the Great War champions the little-known story of the bison, the chameleon, the canary et al in wartime.

Blitzkrieg Commander III Sneak Peek by Pendraken Miniatures

Blitzkrieg Commander III Sneak Peek by Pendraken Miniatures

We've been working almost non-stop on the revised Blitzkrieg Commander rules this year, only taking a few days off to get ready for the York show at the start of this month.  The good news is that the (almost) finished version has now gone off to our feedback group for any final tweaks and suggestions.  The formatting/layout is almost complete as well, just a few things to tidy up before it goes off to the printers.

We're hoping to have the feedback/suggestions back to us in the next 2-3 weeks, allowing us a week to get the rulebook all finalised before going off to the printers.  It's a 2-week turnaround there, so we're aiming for a big release at Salute in April.  The rules will be available in both hardcopy and pdf through Wargame Vault.

It's been a long time coming, but we're nearly there folks!  Here's a little teaser pic as well...

The Brand New Hawk Wargames Website Is Now Live

The brand new Hawk Wargames Website is now live.

The new site now includes the full range of Dropfleet Commander products, available direct from Hawk Wargames for the first time. In addition, the full Dropzone Commander range is also available within this new site format.

In order to best process the first wave of orders, we will be opening the site with around a 1 week pre-order period on Dropfleet Commander products before we start shipping (orders containing Dropfleet Commander products will be shipping from March 3rd onwards). These will be processed and shipped on a first come, first served basis.  As we have done previously, all orders over £100 will ship free worldwide by couriered delivery.

Direct Only Sculpt

Direct Only Sculpt

Here's a glimpse of the model that's coming...

To celebrate the launch of the new website, Dave is designing an exclusive Dropfleet miniature which will be available for a limited time online only. This highly detailed resin ship is the UCM Saratoga class Light Cruiser, an alternate sculpt for the popular New Cairo class Light Cruiser. It will be available exclusively on our website soon, and will make an appearance on sale at Salute 2017.

Website Re-Launch

Website Re-Launch

For those of you who are wondering, this launch had been intentionally delayed due to crossover of staff also working on Kickstarter fulfilment and moreso, that we felt it right to ship all the pledges we had on record before completing the website and taking more direct orders. Now that wave 1 of Kickstarter shipping is complete (except for chasing missing parcels) we can focus on moving forward and providing the content and support that Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander players need.

This all new site has been completely recoded from the ground up and has been designed as a much improved platform for delivering content and support. The windows on the homepage will in due course feature information on upcoming tournaments and events, rules updates, multimedia content and downloads for both systems.

To start things off, we've been releasing the Building the Avenger video series, which will run for a full 20 episodes. In addition, expect to see new content for gamers and hobbyists on a regular basis in future. We are currently working on a range of exiting developments for our players - keep an eye out here for updates in the very near future!

Full Captain Rules

Full Captain Rules

Our Rules cover the entire “Golden Era” of sailing ships, from the mid-17th to the first quarter of the 19th century.

The name of the rules derives from the British Royal Navy of the time, where an officer would have a service rank, but not necessarily a command or ship. Until the officer had a command, he was “on the beach” and on half-pay. A commander who was promoted took the service rank of captain but, until he was given a command or “posted”, he remained on half-pay. Once the captain was given a command, his name was “posted” in the London Gazette. “Full Captain”,  was the alternative term used historically for that rank.

An officer “took post” or was “made post”, being referred to as a post-captain, when he was first commissioned to command a rated vessel – a ship too important to be commanded by a mere commander. Unrated vessels could also, in some cases, be commanded by post-captains.

Once an officer had been “promoted” to post-captain, his further promotion was strictly by seniority of service; if he could avoid death or disgrace, he would eventually become an admiral.

Post Captain is a Tactical Naval Wargame rule set, designed to play actions between small groups of ships or individual ships. The game is specially designed for our 10mm Naval figure Range, which allows gamers to use our model ships and include miniatures to represent guns and crew members.

The historical period covers the convulsive times of Piracy in the Caribbean, the birth of the “Hearts of Oak” and the great Ships of the line, to its decline with the advent of steam ships.

Post Captain allows players to re-create the bloody boardings of the famous pirate “Blackbeard”, the coastal actions of Privateers and smugglers against the Revenue authorities of various nations, as well as small engagements between single ships, ranging from Gunboats to big 74-gun ships of the line.

Players can play the legendary actions of the British, French and Spanish Navies, the newly-born US Navy, Pirate vessels, and much more.

This is a very new and different concept for wargaming in the naval sphere. The game includes miniatures, ships and is a partially card-driven game with a special events system that will bring the fog of war and the whims of the sea to naval combat.

The game will come with a selection of cards for the ships, the crew and a special set of Letters of Marque Cards that are designed to introduce unexpected and unpredictable events and actions of the kind that often happened historically in sailing and naval combats. Most cards are of benefit to the player but some contain a sting.

The game has been designed in 10mm scale with wooden Laser-etched easy-to-build ship kits, all designed from original plans. All ships come complete with a set of dowel rods to fit as masts and spars and 10mm metal miniatures and guns are available to complete your model.

Risks and challenges

Post Captain is a very special concept in naval wargaming. With 10mm scale ships, and brand new rules, using mechanics from our earlier naval rules systems and very special developments we have created an essentially new game.

We have set out to evolve our earlier naval wargaming concept with new rules and new ship designs. All our ships are based on original plans, and the miniatures are sculpted as the result of deep research into naval uniforms.

We have chosen 10mm as the scale that will allow players to play with “big” ships but with a reasonably sized game table.

Friends are Good on the Day of Battle - The 51st (Highland) Division During the First World War (Wolverhampton Military Studies)

Friends are Good on the Day of Battle - The 51st (Highland) Division During the First World War (Wolverhampton Military Studies)

The aim of this book is to evaluate the 51st (Highland) Division over the course of the First World War.

Underpinning the study is an analysis of both change and continuity - at home and overseas - and the performance of the division as a fighting unit. The key themes identified for study have been training, esprit de corps, recruitment and reinforcement, and battle performance. Through the investigation of the key themes, other important characteristics have been analysed, such as command and control, organisation, and the level of centralisation in both the formation and in the wider army.

Key questions in the research apply to both divisional study and to wider academic understanding of the First World War. The book considers a number of themes that have been neglected by historians old and new, and brings into sharp focus some areas of research that may have produced inaccurate assumptions. In addition, a substantial range and quantity of primary sources have been utilised - many unexplored until now. The selection of the 51st (Highland) Division for study was based on a number of criteria: (Highland) Division experiences were both unique and not unique.

In some areas, it was a very individual formation, but in other areas (or at particular times of the war), it was not. The following quotations give some indication of the depth and variety of sources, and the distinctive nature of the 51st: From J.F.C. Fuller, Memoirs of an Unconventional Soldier: 'Presently a section of the night seemed to be advancing slowly towards us, an indistinguishable mass in the darkness; they came on at a pace which was just on the active side of standing still. As they passed, we learned that they were a Highland battalion, part of the 51st Division that fought so well and suffered so heavily on the following day.

None of them spoke, and their silence, the weight and slowness of their tread, and the solemnity of their passing by, bore such an implication of fate, and were shrouded with so much mystery by the night, that one felt as if one were hailing men no longer of this world'. Major-General D.N. Wimberley: 'These two opposing characters of two different types of Scots, the fire of the Highlander and the dourness of the man from the Plains, were so blended in the old Highland Division that come what might against us the Division was resolute'. From M.M. Haldane, A History of the Fourth Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders: 'Long after the war was over a distinguished Irish General expressed the hope that if ever he had troops under him again they might be Scots.

A Scotsman present expressed surprise at his preference for foreigners, to which the General replied that he held that hope because of the high standard of Scottish education, which ensured that the youngest lance-corporal would intelligently carry on his Commander's intentions even after all his officers were killed'. From J.G. Fuller, Troop Morale and Popular Culture in the British and Dominion Armies 1914-1918: 'The 51st perhaps owed its pre-eminence among Scottish Divisions in part to the fact that it was, until April 1918, the only Scottish Territorial Division on the Western Front: the 52nd (Lowland) was lost in the comparative backwater of the Palestine theatre.

That left only the 9th and 15th Divisions which, as Kitchener formations, could not of course match the 51st'. Undoubtedly, the 51st (Highland) Division left strong impressions. How accurate were these impressions? Were they a result of something more than just consistent fighting quality? Indeed, was there a consistent fighting quality? This thesis will attempt to provide the answers. Contains 4 maps & 26 tables.
