Hitler's Swedes: A History of the Swedish Volunteers in the Waffen-SS

Hitler's Swedes: A History of the Swedish Volunteers in the Waffen-SS

Sweden was neutral during the Second World War, but despite this, thousands of Swedes wanted to participate in the war - the largest group in Finland, where over 10,000 Swedes applied to fight against the Red Army.

Another much smaller group which saw action against the same enemy was the Swedish SS volunteers. While the Danish and Norwegian SS volunteers are fairly well known today, their Swedish counterparts remain more unknown. Still, they saw action on both the Eastern Front and NW Europe, and participated in some of the bloodiest clashes: the initial stages of Operation Barbarossa, the winter of 1941/42, the battles of Kursk, Arnhem, Normandy, Narva, the Warsaw uprising, the Cherkassy and Kurland pockets and, finally, the end in Berlin. Compared to many other groups of volunteers, there was never an official recruitment drive in Sweden, which is why only some 180-200 men enlisted.

Those who wanted to recruit themselves often had to make their way to the occupied countries - a fact which makes those Swedes who joined the SS volunteers in the truest sense. As such, this book is as much a history about the units which the Swedes served in, as it is a story about the individuals themselves. It also asks, who were they? What motivated them? What did they experience and how did their service end? With the help of diaries, letters, interviews, police interrogations and German documents from both private and official archives, the history of the Swedish SS volunteers is reconstructed:

The main focus is on those who served at the front, including volunteers in the 'Wiking', 'Nordland', 'Nord' divisions, minor units such as the Den Norske Legion, SS-Panzer-Brigade 'Gross' and the war correspondents of the SS-Standarte 'Kurt Eggers'. Also included are the Swedish non-combatants in the SS, such as the desk clerks within the SS-Hauptamt and security service personal of the RSHA. The book lets us follow individuals such as Hans Lindén, who was the first named Swedish volunteer to fall in action aged barely 19 years old; the unpopular Swedish SS officer Gunnar Eklöf; Elis Höglund, who after several years on the Eastern Front deserted and returned to Sweden; Gösta Borg, who volunteered for the SS a second time as he was denied the chance of becoming an officer in Sweden; and Karl-Axel Bodin, the only Swede to be included in the list of suspected criminals at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, who joined the SD in March, 1945.

The book includes over 150 photos, everything from civilian photos, portraits from the men's time in the SS, pictures taken in the field, post-war photos and documents. Most are from the private albums of the volunteers and many are previously unpublished. Thoroughly researched from primary sources, and providing plenty of absorbing detail, this book is a valuable addition to the history of the SS, and the men who volunteered to serve in it.

Warband Rules

Warband Rules

We are extremely happy to announce that the first set of official Pendraken rules will be available very soon, Warband, written by Steve Hardy!

Warband provides all the rules you need to bring great battles between fantasy armies to your tabletop.

Using miniature figures and terrain, you can fight battles from the glorious sword and sorcery epics you've read about.
You can play games against your friends or competitive battles against worthy opponents.

Warband is designed to be simple to learn and difficult to master, and so it uses a single consistent task resolution method throughout the rules.  Whether you’re trying to get a unit of warriors to move, seeing how effective it’s shooting or fighting is, or how well it has defended itself, you’ll be using the same dice pool mechanism.  You determine the number of dice to roll and each result of 4+ is a success.  The more successes you roll, the better your units will do, and the more likely you are to win.  Simple!

Of course fighting a good tactical battle, getting your units into advantageous situations, and making effective command decisions will mean you’ll be far more likely to win.  Coming up with effective tactics for your chosen army to defeat your opponents is what will take you time to master.

So with Warband’s intuitive rules you’ll be fighting the battle not the rulebook, and hopefully having a lot of fun into the bargain!

You'll be able to decide which of the fantastic races you'd like to command and then construct your force from the lists provided.
Warband includes complete army lists for twelve armies, with abilities, options, spell lists, and descriptions including;
Barbarian men, Dark elves, Dragon men, Eldritch vampires, Goblins, High elves, Hill dwarves, Lizardmen, Samurai apes, Taurians, Undead, and Wood elves.

Army composition and optional upgrades are highly flexible, allowing you to build the force that best fits your style of play.  If you'd like to command a horde of bison riding barbarians, rampaging minotaurs, skirmishing ghouls, or serried ranks of deadly elven archers then you'll find something to suit you in the Warband rules.

The rules are currently at the printers and we're hoping to have the finished rulebooks with us very soon.  As well as the printed copies (available through the Pendraken website, priced at £16), there will also be pdf versions available through Wargame Vault (price to be confirmed).

To go with these new rules, we are giving our Fantasy ranges a complete overhaul to provide as much variety as possible.  The new ranges will feature larger packs of 25 assorted infantry, 12 assorted cavalry or 3 guns with crews, each priced at £4.50 per pack.  All of these packs contain maximum variety, with no two figures being the same!  Phil Lewis has spent a huge amount of time sculpting these, changing weapons, adding shields, cloaks or pouches, to make every figure different to the last.  As far as we know this level of variety has not been seen before in this scale, so we're really looking forward to getting these released and out there to complement the new rules!

The first two revamped ranges to be released will be the Hill Dwarves and the Goblins, each coming with a handy new army pack built around the Warband rules.

We're really excited about this and can't wait to get Warband released, along with the new ranges.

European Weapons & Warfare 1618-1648

European Weapons & Warfare 1618-1648

Back in print is Eduard Wagner's classic study of warfare during the Thirty Years' War, covering the people, uniforms and lives of soldiers from generals to muleteers. A tour de force of the period, it is a veritable bible of reference material for anyone interested in the Thirty Years War (or English Civil Wars, as much of the content is suitable for that too).

Winged Hussar Publishing has published this new edition with the history enthusiast and wargamer in mind, and it will be a superb addition to your reference library.

Buildings in Turmoil

Buildings in Turmoil

On July 1, 1863, the Confederate Army advanced from the north on the town of Gettysburg. As they approached the Union right near Oak Hill, they came upon dismounted Union Cavalry near the John Forney Farm. The battle began!

This is a 10mm multi-part model which you can purchase unassembled and unpainted or assembled and painted. This is very appropriate for 15mm figures also and many wargamers do this to keep a smaller footprint on the wargame table. This model has not been added to the website yet. buildings-in-turmoil.com Please contact me for information and to purchase. We take checks, money orders, credit card and paypal.

Royal Mail Paint Restrictions Lifted

Royal Mail Paint Restrictions Lifted

It's been a while since our last update, but the work has continued behind the scenes and I am delighted to announce that we have received the following email today from Mr Gee, Chairman of Royal Mail:
We have lifted the four item restriction. Customers can now send an unlimited number in any one package but the volume of each container should still not exceed 150ml.

The items must be securely closed and placed in a leak-proof liner, such as a sealed polythene bag, so that any inadvertent leakage is contained within the outer packaging. Surround with absorbent material such as newspaper and sufficient cushioning material to protect each item from damage. The sender's name and return address must be clearly visible on the outer packaging.

The changes went live on 12 January, 2015. I trust this will be a welcome decision for you.
This is fantastic news, and we are so pleased that we're able to announce this result.

We would once again like to thank everyone who has signed and supported this campaign in any way. It's been a long 14 months of discussion and emails back and forth, but it's been worth it!
We would also like to encourage everyone to go and buy some paint from their vendor of choice! There are loads of fantastic businesses in the U.K. supporting our hobby, and this is a big win for all of them.

Thanks Again To Everyone!

Cheers!

Brigade Models Release 10mm SF Buildings

Brigade Models Release 10mm SF Buildings

Towards the end of last year, we had a number of inquiries about the suitability of our 6mm and 15mm buildings for use with 10mm models. Given that neither really suit that scale, being too small and too large respectively, we figured that the only way to go was to re-scale some of our existing models to 10mm and release them to see how much demand is out there.

The initial batch of six codes is now on our website, with more to follow in the near future.

B10-101 – Small Dwelling – £1.75
B10-102 – Garage/Workshop – £1.50
B10-108 – Small Dwelling – 2 – £2.00

Blitzkrieg Commander Rules

Blitzkrieg Commander IV

After a lot of hard work and effort we are delighted to announce that BKC-IV will be officially released on 6th April 2019, at the Salute show!

Our revision team, led by Mark Fry, have put a tremendous amount of effort into fixing the mistakes of BKC-III and getting a much-improved set of rules back into print and into your hands.  We've also used an extensive feedback group to read through and playtest the new rules and the response has been extremely positive.  We're very excited about BKC-IV and we hope you're going to like it too!

Replacement Copies

Now our first priority is to get a copy of BKC-IV out to everyone who bought BKC-III when it was released.  How this is done will depend on how you purchased originally:

Bought Online / Not going to Salute 2019

- You will already be in the replacement queue and don't need to do anything.  Your copy will ship out first, possibly before we leave for Salute but most likely on the Monday/Tuesday after the show.  If you've moved house since April 2017, you'll need to drop us an email with your new address.

Bought Online / Going to Salute 2019

- Please contact us to let us know that you will be attending Salute and we will pull your original order from the replacement queue.  We'll bring your new copy along to Salute for you.

Bought at Salute / Not going to Salute 2019

- If you bought at Salute but won't be attending this year, we'll need you to either send us the cover of your BKC-III book, or a picture of it by email, along with the address that you'd like your replacement sending to.  We apologise for the hassle involved in doing this, but it's the only way for us to verify that you bought a copy of BKC-III.  If you're outside the UK, it's probably easier to send a photo, but contact us if you're having any problems.

Bought at Salute / Going to Salute 2019

- If you'll be attending Salute again this year, simply bring your copy of BKC-III along to the show and we'll swap it for a shiny new copy of BKC-IV!  If you'd like to keep hold of the previous rules for any reason, we'll need to either remove the cover or mark the inside to show that the copy has been replaced.

Bought on Wargame Vault

- You don't need to do anything at all, you will receive your new pdf copy of BKC-IV through Wargame Vault automatically.  We don't have a confirmed date for this just yet, but you should receive your replacement pdf by Monday 8th at the latest.

If there's any queries on that, please let me know and we'll get you sorted out.  If you've already been in touch or given us your BKC-III cover, then you're already in the replacement system and don't need to worry.

New Pre-Orders!

For anyone who didn't buy a copy of BKC-III, we have put BKC-IV up for pre-order on the Pendraken website now:   Any new pre-orders will ship out after the replacement copies have been dealt with, so we're estimating April 11th/12th for that.  BKC-IV will be available at a discounted launch price for a limited time, so grab yourself a copy for £20! (RRP £25).  This offer will end and the rules will return to RRP when we get back to work after the Salute show on Monday April 8th.

So What's New?

One question we know that people will be asking is 'What's changed in BKC-IV?', so here's a brief summary from our author:

Our overriding intention with BKCIV was to show a natural evolution from BCKII, retaining the best elements of BKCIII but at the same time remaining true to both the BKC tradition and the Commander series of rules mechanisms.  In addition, we’ve added new game mechanisms, incorporated several widely used, tried and tested ‘house rules’, as well as tidying up the army lists.  The design of BKCIV will allow players to choose between a more formalised and higher-level game, back (almost) to BCKI and BKCII in many ways; or to play a much more granular game, almost but not quite down to a skirmish level or 1:1 level game.  We have also added (by request) more Example Tables, for ease of play and quick reference.

The significant changes are:
•   An enhanced and expanded Reconnaissance section – making Recce a more important and integral part of the game.
•   Introduction of Snipers and their effect on the battlefield.
•   Changes to the way Infantry Anti-Tank Weapons work to make them more cost effective and realistic.
•   Changes to the Artillery Barrage rules – to remove a potential for imbalance.
•   The correction of an anomaly around Naval Guns and FAOs.
•   Adding a new Tactical Doctrine for Guerrillas/Partisans, with additional features to make playing an insurgency or resistance style game possible.
•   Re-working and clarifying the Scenarios.
•   Adding to, re-wording and editing the list of Special Characteristics.

Rather than a printed QRS supplied with the rules, we'll be putting up a pdf download for people to print off as many copies as they like.  Along with this we'll be creating a series of pdfs containing a variety of expanded Optional Rules – including Perilous Terrain, Armoured Trains and Refugees amongst many others.  More of these Optional Rules will be added to the archive going forward, as will more Army Lists (an ANZAC list is already on the work-bench!)

If you are a long-standing BKC player or a new convert to WW2 gaming or even a ‘refugee’ from another set of rules, we believe that BKCIV will give you a fast to play, enjoyable and realistic table-top WW2 gaming experience.

Thank You

And finally, we'd like to apologise to everyone who bought a copy of BKC-III and has had to wait for us to get this fixed.  We appreciate how patient and understanding you've been throughout this process and we hope you enjoy BKC-IV.  We'd also like to thank every single person who has helped us get this new ruleset into production, including the authors, the playtest groups, and anyone who has provided feedback or even just a supportive email or comment at a show.  It's been a long road to get here but we're there now and we can all start enjoying some BKC games again!

The game can be played at one of two levels: 1 base = 1 Platoon (the scale the game was designed for) or 1 base = 1 Squad or Individual Vehicle. The ground scale is 1cm = 20m or 1cm = 10m respectively. One turn represents up to 30 minutes of real-life action.

Civilian Refugees - Fleeing or retiring civilians played a major role in affecting an armed engagement and these additional rules make for some really interesting games.

Land of the Free

Land of the Free is the new set of wargaming rules from Osprey that allow players to recreate the various conflicts that broke out in North America shortly prior to and just after Independence, including the French and Indian Wars, the Revolution and the War of 1812. This set of rules lets players begin their campaigns with small warbands of 10-20 miniatures of any scale and develop their forces over time, building them into armies hundreds strong. A unique system of command points and the need to carefully manage resources or risk becoming vulnerable to counter-attack have to be finely balanced against the need to gain objectives throughout the game, creating a challenging, but enjoyable environment for your armies.
